Last updated: May 3, 2026

Not Legal Advice. The CourtRoom is an educational and civic engagement platform. Nothing on this platform - including community deliberations, the legal notice generator, or any user-submitted content - constitutes legal advice. For legal matters, consult a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using The CourtRoom (the "Platform"), operated by OpenVerdict Inc., a nonprofit corporation, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Platform.

We may update these Terms at any time. Continued use of the Platform after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

2. Description of Service

The CourtRoom is a civic deliberation platform that allows users to review publicly available legal cases, submit arguments, cast verdicts, and access general legal information. The Platform also provides a legal notice generator tool ("Your Claim") intended to help users draft general correspondence.

The CourtRoom is operated by OpenVerdict Inc., a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization.

3. Not Legal Advice

The Platform provides general legal information only. No content on The CourtRoom - including community deliberations, arguments posted by other users, AI-assisted or template-generated notices, legal definitions, or any other material - constitutes legal advice, creates an attorney-client relationship, or should be relied upon as a substitute for professional legal counsel.

OpenVerdict Inc. is not a law firm and does not employ attorneys in a legal advisory capacity. Always consult a licensed attorney for advice specific to your situation.

4. Eligibility and Accounts

You must be at least 13 years of age to use the Platform. By creating an account, you represent that you meet this requirement.

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account and for all activity that occurs under it. You agree to provide accurate information and to notify us promptly of any unauthorized use.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

5. User-Generated Content

You retain ownership of content you submit to the Platform ("User Content"). By submitting User Content, you grant OpenVerdict Inc. a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, display, reproduce, and distribute that content in connection with operating the Platform.

You are solely responsible for your User Content. You agree not to post content that is false, defamatory, harassing, unlawful, or that infringes the intellectual property rights of any third party.

We reserve the right to remove any User Content at our discretion, without notice.

6. Prohibited Conduct

You agree not to:

  • Use the Platform for any unlawful purpose
  • Impersonate any person or entity
  • Post spam, misinformation, or harassing content
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the Platform or its infrastructure
  • Use automated tools to scrape or interact with the Platform without written permission
  • Interfere with the integrity of community deliberations

7. Intellectual Property

All Platform design, branding, code, and original content is the property of OpenVerdict Inc. and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not reproduce, modify, or distribute any portion of the Platform without our express written permission.

Case information displayed on the Platform may be sourced from public records and third-party legal databases including CourtListener. That content remains subject to its respective licenses.

8. Disclaimers

The Platform is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. OpenVerdict Inc. does not warrant that the Platform will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components.

We do not endorse, verify, or guarantee the accuracy of any user-submitted content or community deliberation outcome.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, OpenVerdict Inc. and its officers, directors, employees, and volunteers shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of your use of or inability to use the Platform.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of the Platform shall not exceed $100.

10. Governing Law
